Let Buyers Pay What They Like for a Product

Updated October 20, 2026

A fixed price makes every buyer pay the same, whether they love what you made or can only spare a little. Pay What You Like lets the buyer choose the amount at checkout, the way Gumroad does. You set the floor, and they decide how far above it to go.

The floor is the price you already have in FluentCart. A free product becomes “free, or pay what you like”. A $19 product becomes “$19 or more”. There is no second price to keep in sync, so listings, price books, Multi-Currency Checkout and your product’s structured data keep working as before.

Turn It On

The module starts switched off. Turning it on changes nothing for buyers until you pick the products:

  1. Go to FluentCart → GT Extensions, find Pay What You Like in the Modules tab, turn it on and click Save Settings.
  2. Open a product in FluentCart’s product editor. A new Pay what you like card sits beside Checkout options.
  3. Tick Let buyers choose what to pay, fill in the amounts you want and click the card’s own Save button. The card saves separately from the product.

Set the Amounts

Each option’s FluentCart price is its minimum, and the card lists those minimums so you can check them before you save. Set a price of 0 to let buyers take the product free or pay what they like. The rest is optional:

  • Suggested amount: filled in at checkout. Leave it empty to start at the minimum.
  • Quick amounts: up to four one-tap buttons shown at checkout, for example 0, 5 and 10. A 0 button works as a one-tap free choice. Amounts below an option’s minimum are left out for that option.
  • Maximum: the most a buyer can enter. Leave it empty to allow up to 1,000,000, which stops a typo from charging a fortune.

Amounts are in your store currency, USD on this site. When Multi-Currency Checkout shows another currency, the amounts are converted the same way as your add-on fees. The suggested and quick amounts can’t be above the maximum, and the card won’t save if they are.

Here is a real setup. My Easy Affiliate Marketing guide has a FluentCart price of $0 and quick amounts of $0, $2 and $5, with no suggested amount and no maximum. A buyer can take it free with one tap, or chip in $2 or $5 on the way through.

What the Buyer Sees

Checkout shows a Name your price box above the payment methods, with one row for each pay-what-you-like product in the cart:

  • The product name and a price field, pre-filled with the suggested amount or the minimum.
  • The quick amount buttons, if you set any.
  • The minimum for that product, or “Enter 0 to get it free, or any amount you like.” on a free product.

The total updates as the buyer changes the amount. Moving between free and paid reloads checkout, so the payment methods appear or go away. If you use the Get it for free button from Checkout Enhancements, it turns back into the usual button once the buyer picks a paid amount.

An amount below the minimum or above the maximum shows an “Enter at least” or “Enter at most” message with the limit. Buyers type plain numbers like 12.50, without a currency symbol.

On product pages that print FluentCart’s price, a short line under it says “Pay what you like: this price or more”, or “Free, or pay what you like” on a free product. Pages whose template doesn’t print FluentCart’s price, such as custom landing pages built with GT Page Blocks Builder, don’t show the line. Say it in your own copy there.

A button can carry its own amount. Add gtfc_price to a checkout link or an instant checkout link:

https://example.com/checkout/?gtfc_price=25
https://example.com/?fluent-cart=instant_checkout&item_id=123&quantity=1&gtfc_price=25

The amount is set when the page opens and kept within the product’s minimum and maximum, so gtfc_price=1 on a $19 product still asks for $19. One amount fits one product; with several pay-what-you-like products in the cart, it goes to the first. The buyer can still change it in the Name your price box.

This is how you build “Pay $5”, “Pay $10” and “Pay $25” buttons on a sales page without three separate products.

How the Amount Reaches Your Orders

The chosen amount becomes the product line’s real price, not a fee added on top. That matters, because everything downstream reads the line price:

  • Coupons and tax are worked out from the chosen amount.
  • Coupon Affiliates commission is paid on what the buyer actually paid.
  • Order items and FluentCart’s reports show the real amount.
  • Each order’s activity gets a Pay what you like note listing every product with its chosen amount and its minimum.

Amounts are checked when the buyer saves them and again at Place order, including amounts that arrive with the form when the checkout script didn’t run. A tampered request below the minimum is refused with the same “Enter at least” message.

Limits Worth Knowing

  • Subscriptions keep their set price. The card marks subscription options as “subscription, keeps its price”, because renewals would need rules of their own. Only one-time options become pay what you like.
  • Switching currency resets the amount to that currency’s default, the suggested amount or the minimum, converted. The buyer picks again in the new currency.
  • Invoice payments are left alone. An invoice carries the price you agreed, so its checkout can’t change it.
  • There is no price field on the product page itself. Buyers choose at checkout. Use links with gtfc_price for buttons with set amounts.
  • If a product’s price changes while it sits in someone’s cart, Place order asks them to reload the page and check the amount.

Module Settings

Open Configure on Pay What You Like under FluentCart → GT Extensions:

  • Checkout box heading: Name your price by default.
  • Line under the heading: optional, up to 200 characters, such as “Pay more if it helps you, or the minimum if money is tight.” Leave it empty to show only the heading.
  • Say “Pay what you like” under the price on product pages: on by default. Untick it to hide the product-page line.

Turning the module off puts every product back on its normal FluentCart price. The per-product settings stay saved, so turning it on again brings them back.
