Add Order Bumps to Checkout

Version 0.1.0 Updated October 28, 2026

The best moment to offer a small add-on is when the customer has already decided to buy. An extended license, a support plan or a bonus pack at a checkout-only price often costs the buyer one tick. Without a tool for it, that offer never shows up where the decision happens.

Order Bumps adds one-click offers to the EDD checkout. Each bump is a checkbox with a headline, a price and an optional image. Ticking it adds the download to the order at the bump price, and the price is always worked out on the server. Every bump tracks how often it was shown, accepted and how much it earned.

Set the Global Options

Switch on Order Bumps from Stackless → Dashboard. Then open Stackless → Settings and choose Order Bumps under Sales & invoices. Two settings apply to every bump:

  • Bumps per checkout: how many bumps one checkout can show, from 1 to 5. Default 2. When more qualify, the lowest priority numbers show first.
  • Default checkbox text: up to 120 characters. Default “Yes, add this to my order”.

Create a Bump

Bumps live on their own screen at Stackless → Order bumps.

  1. Click Add order bump.
  2. Fill in the Offer, What the customer sees and When to show it panels.
  3. Tick Show this bump at checkout.
  4. Click Create order bump.

Fill In the Offer

  • Internal name: only you see this.
  • Status: Show this bump at checkout.
  • Download to offer: a download with one price, a subscription download or one price option of a download with variable prices.
  • Quantity: 1 to 99. Above 1 only applies when cart quantities are enabled in EDD. Customers can’t change it at checkout. They can only remove the offer.
  • Bump price: Percentage off, Amount off, Fixed price or Regular price, plus the amount. New bumps start at 20% off.

Bump amounts are per unit and in your store currency. The price can’t go below zero, and a percentage is capped at 100.

Write What the Customer Sees

  • Headline: up to 160 characters. Blank shows “Add [download] to your order”.
  • Description: one or two sentences, up to 1,000 characters. Links, bold and italic are allowed.
  • Checkbox text: falls back to your Default checkbox text.
  • Image: Download image (the default), Custom image or No image.
  • Placement: Before the payment details (the default), Just above the purchase button or In the order summary.

The headline and description accept three tokens. They show in the shopper’s currency:

TokenShows
{price}The bump price for the full quantity
{regular_price}The download’s normal price for the same quantity
{discount}The discount text, such as “20% off”, “Save $10.00” or “Special price”

Placement works on the EDD Checkout block and the [download_checkout] shortcode.

Choose When a Bump Shows

The When to show it panel holds the cart rules. A bump shows only when all of these pass:

  • Cart contains any of these downloads, or …or any download in these categories. Leave both empty to show the bump on every cart.
  • Hide when the cart has these downloads
  • Hide when the cart has these categories
  • Cart subtotal at least
  • Cart subtotal at most

The subtotal counts items before tax and discounts, and it leaves out bump items, so a bump can’t qualify itself. Leave a subtotal box empty for no limit. Categories are EDD download categories. Hold Ctrl or ⌘ to pick several downloads or categories.

A bump never shows when the offered download is already in the cart. Priority, from 0 to 999 with 10 as the default, decides which bumps win when more qualify than Bumps per checkout allows. Lower numbers show first, then the oldest bump.

Downloads a Bump Can’t Offer

When you save, Stackless checks the offer and shows a warning when something’s wrong:

  • No download chosen: the bump stays inactive until it has one.
  • A download with variable prices but no price option picked: the bump can’t pick one for the customer, so it stays inactive. Choose one of its price options.
  • A download that isn’t published or can’t be purchased: the bump stays switched on but is hidden at checkout until that changes.
  • A download that needs choices on its own page, such as a required add-on: the bump is hidden at checkout. Make those choices optional or offer another download.

What Happens in the Cart

  • Ticking or unticking a bump updates the cart and total without a page reload. If the order goes from paid to free, or back, the checkout reloads.
  • Bump lines show an “Offer:” note with the discount text, such as “Offer: 20% off”.
  • If the cart stops qualifying, or you deactivate the bump, the bump line is removed from the cart.
  • The price comes from the download on every cart calculation, so it can’t be changed from the browser.
  • The EDD order details screen has an Order bumps box that lists each bump the order showed, marked Added or Shown, not added.

Read the Take Rate

The Stackless → Order bumps list shows each bump’s Offer, Placement, Status, Shown, Accepted, Take rate and Revenue.

Stackless for EDD Order bumps list with three bumps showing offer, placement, status, shown, accepted, take rate and revenue columns
  • Take rate is accepted divided by shown.
  • Counts update once per order, when the order is marked Completed. Abandoned checkouts don’t count.
  • Revenue is the bump line’s total, kept in your store currency. An accept in another currency still counts but adds nothing to Revenue.

Row actions let you Edit, Activate or Deactivate, Reset stats or Delete. Deleting a bump deletes its statistics too, but orders keep their items.

Good to Know

  • No bumps show while the cart pays a fixed order, such as an invoice or a renewal, because a new line would change its total.
  • Bumps are stored in their own database table, {prefix}stackless_edd_order_bumps, not as posts.
  • With multi-currency on, bump prices show in the visitor’s currency. Amounts you enter stay in your store currency.
  • Managing bumps needs the manage_shop_settings capability.
