How does the study time calculator work?
The calculator first estimates your total study load, then spreads that load across the days you actually plan to study. It does not pretend that every calendar day is available.
- Total study time = topics × average hours per topic.
- Effective study days = days until the deadline × study days per week ÷ 7.
- Daily study target = total study time ÷ effective study days.
- Weekly target = daily study target × study days per week.
The schedule check compares the required daily target with the focused hours you said were available. If the target is higher, the calculator shows the daily shortfall instead of pretending the plan is fine.
How should you read the result?
Start with the daily target, but do not stop there. A useful plan needs enough time for the full syllabus and enough flexibility for difficult topics, missed sessions, practice papers, and revision.

- Weekly target: the total workload you need to protect in your calendar.
- Effective study days: the actual number of study days inside your deadline.

A worked study plan
Suppose you have 48 topics, 42 calendar days, six study days per week, three focused hours available per study day, and an estimate of 1.5 hours per topic.
- Total study time: 48 × 1.5 = 72 hours.
- Effective study days: 42 × 6 ÷ 7 = 36 days.
- Daily study target: 72 ÷ 36 = 2 hours.
- Weekly target: 2 × 6 = 12 hours.
- Spare capacity: 3 available hours – 2 required hours = 1 hour per study day.
That spare hour is useful. I would not fill it with new material immediately. Keep part of it for retrieval practice, mock tests, and topics that take longer than expected.
How many hours should you study each day?
There is no universal daily number that works for every student. Your subject, current knowledge, deadline, concentration, and definition of a “topic” all change the answer. The honest target is the amount your syllabus requires and your week can sustain.

- Recalculate with real data. After three to five sessions, replace your guessed time per topic with the average you actually needed.
- Separate coverage from mastery. Reading a topic once is not the same as being able to solve a problem or explain it from memory.

Common study-planning mistakes
Most bad schedules fail before the first session because their inputs are optimistic. Watch for these errors:
- Entering all free time as focused study time.
- Assuming every topic needs the same effort.
- Counting seven study days per week when your routine rarely supports it.
- Leaving no separate time for revision, practice questions, or mock exams.
- Trying to rescue an overloaded plan by sleeping less.
- Keeping the original plan after your actual pace proves it wrong.
If the required hours exceed your available time, change the plan, not the arithmetic. Add days, increase the number of realistic study sessions, reduce low-priority coverage, or ask a teacher which topics deserve the deepest work.
Turn the estimate into a weekly schedule
Put the weekly target into your calendar before you assign individual topics. A 12-hour week could become six two-hour sessions, four three-hour sessions, or a mixed schedule around classes and work. The right split is the one you can repeat without borrowing time from sleep.
