Minimum, Maximum and Step Quantities
Some products only make sense in set amounts. Stickers sell in packs of 10, a wholesale line needs a minimum order, and a launch item should be capped at two per customer. WooCommerce has no setting for any of that.
Min/Max Quantity sets a minimum, a maximum and a step store-wide, per product and per variation. The limits feed WooCommerce’s own quantity fields and are checked on the server, on the classic cart and on the Cart and Checkout blocks.
Set the Store Defaults
Go to Stackless → Settings → Min/Max Quantity. Under Store defaults:
- Minimum quantity: defaults to 1.
- Maximum quantity: defaults to 0, which means no limit. Stock levels still cap it.
- Sold in multiples of: defaults to 1.
Override on a Product or Variation
For simple and variable products, open Product data → Inventory and find Quantity limits. It has the same three fields: Minimum quantity, Maximum quantity and Sold in multiples of. Leave a field blank to use the store default.
Each variation also has a Quantity limits block with the same three fields. A blank variation field falls back to the product value.
The order of priority is variation, then product, then store default, and each value resolves on its own. A variation can set only a maximum and still take its minimum from the product.
How the Numbers Are Tidied
The plugin rounds the limits so they always agree with the step:
- A minimum that isn’t a multiple of the step is raised to the next multiple. With a step of 6 and a minimum of 4, the minimum becomes 6.
- A maximum is lowered to the nearest multiple of the step, and never drops below the minimum.
- Products set to Sold individually are always limited to exactly 1.
Write the Shopper Messages
Under Shopper messages, you can use the placeholders {product}, {min}, {max}, {step} and {quantity}:
- Limits note: show the limits next to the quantity box on product pages. On by default.
- Minimum note: defaults to “Minimum {min}”. Shown when the minimum is above 1.
- Maximum note: defaults to “Maximum {max}”. Shown when there’s a maximum.
- Step note: defaults to “Sold in packs of {step}”. Shown when the step is above 1.
- Below minimum error: defaults to
You need at least {min} of "{product}" in your cart. - Above maximum error: defaults to
You can buy at most {max} of "{product}". - Wrong multiple error: defaults to
"{product}" is sold in multiples of {step}.
On variable products, the note updates as the shopper picks a variation.
Where Limits Are Enforced
- The quantity box on product pages, and the quantity inputs in the Cart block and product blocks.
- Classic add to cart, AJAX add to cart from shop grids, and cart updates.
- The classic cart and checkout, which block checkout while any line breaks its limits.
- The Cart and Checkout blocks, which show the error and refuse the cart.
The check counts the total quantity of that product or variation across the whole cart, not one line at a time. Shop-grid Add to cart buttons on simple products, and add-to-cart links without a quantity, add the minimum.
Good to Know
- Grouped and external products are never limited, because they have no quantity of their own.
- Developers can change the resolved limits with the
stackless_quantity_limits_limitsfilter.
