How to Sell a Productized Service in WooCommerce

Updated October 19, 2026

You sell a website audit, a coaching session or a logo package at a fixed price. WooCommerce takes the payment fine, then sends a generic order confirmation, and the customer has no idea how to book a time or send their brief. You end up emailing every buyer by hand.

To sell a productized service in WooCommerce, you mark the product as a service and write what happens after payment. Once the order is paid, the customer sees your instructions and a booking or intake link on the thank-you page, in their order emails and in My Account. The link can carry their name and email, so your booking tool fills them in.

Stackless for WooCommerce is my all-in-one plugin for WooCommerce, and Service Products is one of its modules. A service product never needs shipping, so a cart with only services skips the shipping step.

Before You Start

  • Service Products switched on under Stackless → Dashboard.
  • A booking or intake tool, such as a calendar link or a form, if the service needs one.
  • A clear scope. A productized service sells best when the buyer knows exactly what they get and when.

Write the Product Like an Offer

Before the setup, the product page needs to answer what a buyer asks first:

  • What they get, such as “a 20-point audit report and a 45-minute call”
  • How long it takes, such as “delivered within 5 business days”
  • What you need from them, such as “access to your site and Google Search Console”

Put this in the product description. The after-payment instructions then only have to cover the next step, not sell the service again.

Mark the Product as a Service

  1. Edit the product, simple or variable.
  2. Tick Service next to Virtual and Downloadable at the top of Product data.
  3. Open the Service tab.
  4. Write the After-payment instructions: how the customer books, sends a brief or receives the work.
  5. Add the Booking or intake link, and set Link button text, such as “Book your call”.
  6. Update the product.

The link can carry order details, so the customer doesn’t type their name and email twice. These placeholders are replaced and URL-encoded:

  • {order_number} and {order_id}
  • {email}, {first_name}, {last_name} and {name}
  • {product}

For example, a calendar link that knows who paid and for what:

https://cal.com/you/audit-call?email={email}&name={name}&notes=Order%20{order_number}

With the order number in the booking, every calendar event points back to a paid order.

Offer Tiers and Add-ons

A variable product turns one service into tiers, such as Basic, Standard and Premium audits, each with its own price. A variation of a service product never needs shipping either.

For extras, such as rush delivery or an extra revision, the Fields & Paid Add-ons module adds paid options on the product page. A rush fee there is easier to sell than a separate rush product, because it sits right next to the decision.

Set What Shows Before Payment

Go to Stackless → Settings → Service Products:

  • Heading: “%s: what happens next” by default, where %s is the product name.
  • Emails: on by default. Instructions go in the customer’s processing and completed order emails.
  • Before payment: shown instead of the instructions while an order is unpaid, such as with bank transfer.

Keep Before payment filled in. It stops a bank transfer customer from booking a slot before the money arrives.

Check It Works

  1. Buy the service with a test order.
  2. Check the thank-you page shows your heading, instructions and the booking button.
  3. Click the button and confirm your booking tool shows the prefilled email and name.
  4. Open the order confirmation email and My Account order and check both show the same block.

What It Won’t Do

  • It doesn’t schedule the session itself. It hands the customer to your booking tool with their details.
  • It doesn’t track delivery of the work. Use order statuses or notes for that.
  • Instructions never go to store admin emails, only to the customer.
  • A service with no instructions and no link shows nothing after payment.

If a service needs a price agreed first, How to Send a Quote and Turn It into a Paid Order covers custom pricing.
