Lifetime licenses pay off only if you keep the theme long enough. Blocksy Personal, for example, is $69 a year or $199 once, so the lifetime license breaks even in just under 3 years. That’s a good bet on a theme you already know and a poor one on a theme you’re trying for the first time.
Which WordPress Theme to Buy
For most new sites, I’d buy one of the lightweight block-era themes: GeneratePress, Kadence or Blocksy. All three work with the block editor, load little on the front end and have been maintained for years. Astra belongs in the same group if you want a large starter-template library to build from.
The licenses are where they differ:
- GeneratePress: GP Premium is an annual license for up to 500 sites, which makes it the easy pick for freelancers building many sites.
- Blocksy: Personal covers 1 site, and unlimited use needs the Agency plan. Both have lifetime options.
- Kadence: the Pro features now come in Kadence Essentials, priced per site, along with the Pro blocks and form builder.
Divi and Avada are a different purchase. You’re buying a builder ecosystem as much as a theme, and the deals look bigger because the regular prices are bigger. They’re good value if you’ll build inside that ecosystem and expensive if you only wanted a fast blog theme.

When a New Theme Won’t Help
Don’t buy a new theme to fix a slow site. Slowness usually comes from plugins, hosting or oversized images, and a site rebuilt on a new theme carries the same problems across. Measure first, then decide whether the theme is actually the problem.

Can I switch themes later without breaking my site?
Content in the block editor usually survives a theme switch. Layouts built with theme-specific blocks, hooks or a bundled page builder need rebuilding. Test the switch on a staging copy before doing it on a live site.
When do WordPress theme deals go deepest?
Black Friday and Cyber Monday bring the biggest theme discounts, and many vendors also discount lifetime licenses then. If you’re not in a hurry, that’s the time to buy.
