Best Commerce Colleges in India 2026: Ranks, CUET Cutoffs, Fees
The best commerce colleges in India come with a contradiction worth understanding before you fill a single preference. Shri Ram College of Commerce is ranked first in commerce by the India Today-MDRA survey and eighteenth overall by NIRF, at 69.01. Hindu College and Miranda House, which most commerce aspirants never consider, sit first and second on the NIRF colleges table at 84.01 and 83.20.
Both rankings are defensible. NIRF scores the whole institution across teaching, research, outreach and graduation outcomes. India Today-MDRA ranks by stream. So SRCC genuinely is the strongest commerce department in the country, and genuinely is the eighteenth-strongest college taken as a whole. Which number matters depends on whether you’re buying a department or a campus.
Cutoffs below are on Delhi University’s 1,000-mark CUET composite and shift every year. For how commerce compares against the other streams, see my comparison of the best colleges in India.
Best commerce colleges in India, ranked
NIRF scores are from the 2025 colleges table, which covers undergraduate arts, science and commerce colleges together. CUET figures are indicative general-category cutoffs on Delhi University’s 1,000-mark composite.
| College | City | NIRF 2025 | Commerce standing | Fees | CUET (indicative) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SRCC | Delhi | #18 (69.01) | #1 in commerce, India Today-MDRA | ₹32,420/yr | Among the highest in India |
| Hindu College | Delhi | #1 (84.01) | Top tier | ₹20,000 to ₹28,000/yr | 935 to 952 |
| Lady Shri Ram College | New Delhi | #17 (69.87) | Top tier for women | DU band | 930+ |
| Hansraj College | Delhi | #3 (81.75) | Strong | DU band | 920+ |
| St. Xavier’s College | Kolkata | #8 (76.07) | Best outside Delhi | Autonomous, moderate | Own merit process |
| Christ University | Bengaluru | Ranked | Strong private | Private, higher | Own entrance |
| Loyola College | Chennai | #14 (71.14) | Strong in the south | Low, aided | Own merit process |
| Narsee Monjee (NMIMS) | Mumbai | Ranked | Strong private | Private, high | NPAT |
Which commerce college fits what you’re after
Commerce splits harder than most streams. A CA track, a finance-placement track and an economics-to-postgraduate track want different colleges.
| If you want | Top pick | Runner-up | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| The strongest commerce department | SRCC | Hindu College | #1 in commerce on India Today-MDRA, and the deepest recruiter base |
| The strongest college overall | Hindu College | Miranda House | NIRF Colleges #1 at 84.01, and #1 in arts and science on India Today-MDRA |
| BA Economics rather than B.Com | SRCC | St. Stephen’s College | SRCC’s BA Economics is the harder admit and the stronger postgraduate feeder |
| A CA or CS track alongside the degree | SRCC | Christ University | Delhi’s coaching ecosystem and class timings are built around it |
| Commerce outside Delhi | St. Xavier’s Kolkata | Loyola College Chennai | NIRF Colleges #8 and #14, the strongest non-Delhi options |
| A women’s college | Lady Shri Ram College | Miranda House | LSR for commerce and economics, Miranda House for science and humanities |
| A private campus with placement machinery | NMIMS Mumbai | Christ University | You’re buying corporate access and infrastructure, not research depth |
2026 Rankings and Admission Realities
The 2026 top tier for B.Com in India. Tier 1 (95%+ cutoff in CUET-UG): SRCC (Delhi University), Hindu College, St. Stephen’s, Lady Shri Ram College, Hansraj College, Loyola College Chennai. Tier 2 (90-95% cutoff): Christ University, Madras Christian College, Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce, NMIMS (Anil Surendra Modi School of Commerce), Narsee Monjee. Tier 3 (85-90% cutoff): most well-regarded private university commerce programs, Amity, Manipal, LPU. The single biggest 2024-2026 shift: CUET-UG replaced individual college entrance tests at all central universities, which has compressed admission ranges and made the test itself more determinative.
The placement reality varies enormously across tiers. Tier 1 colleges place 80-95% of commerce graduates into Big 4 audit firms, investment banking analyst roles, consulting, and top MBA programs. Tier 2 places 50-70%. Tier 3 places 25-45%. The fee differentials are equally large: SRCC at roughly ₹40K-60K/year total vs Symbiosis at ₹3-5 lakh/year vs Christ University at ₹2-4 lakh/year. The honest 2026 take: if your CUET score gets you into Tier 1, take it regardless of campus. If you’re in Tier 2 territory, prioritize college reputation in your home region (placements are largely regional). For Tier 3, focus on specific specializations (cost accounting, financial markets, business analytics) over general B.Com, the specialization matters more than the brand at that tier.
