JEE Advanced Exam Day Instructions & Prohibited Items

For JEE Advanced, you should carry your printed admit card and an accepted original photo ID, arrive before the reporting deadline and follow the permitted-items rules for your sitting. An item you normally carry, including an analog watch, can still be prohibited.

The 2026 examination was organized by IIT Roorkee and held on 17 May 2026. The rules below describe that cycle. For a later examination, your admit card and its official candidate instructions take priority.

You can use the 2026 information brochure and official candidate guidelines to check documents, clothing and what you can carry.

You should prepare your documents and permitted stationery before leaving for the center. Keep valuables at home where possible; do not assume the center can store them for you.

List of Forbidden Items

The 2026 candidate guidelines prohibit the following items inside the examination center:

Candidates will be subjected to a metal detector test and if someone is caught defying or breaking the rules, their candidacy may be revoked, and they may be barred from taking the JEE Advanced Exam in the future.

Many objects that we normally bring to a test venue are prohibited in the JEE Advanced Exam. So, below we have listed those items:

• Watches and timepieces, including analog, digital, smart and programmable watches.
• Mobile phones, Bluetooth devices, earphones, microphones, pagers, health bands, smart glasses and other electronic gadgets.
• Printed, blank or handwritten paper; log tables, writing pads, scales, geometry or pencil boxes and pouches.
• Calculators, Pen Drives and electronic pens.
• Wallets, handbags, goggles, belts and caps.

Clothing and accessories also need care. The 2026 guidance includes these rules and exceptions:

• Avoid ornaments and metal accessories such as rings, bracelets, earrings, chains, badges and clothes with large buttons.
• Articles of faith may be worn subject to early reporting and screening. An item suspected of concealing a device may be refused.
• Light clothing is preferred; full sleeves or woollens are allowed subject to early reporting and screening.

You should also check the instructions printed on your admit card before packing. Permission to carry ordinary stationery does not extend to a pencil box, pouch or electronic pen.

List of Allowed Items

Earlier, we have listed out the items that are not allowed in the exam hall. Now you can see the list of items that are allowed during the advanced exam of IIT JEE.

• Printed admit card and an accepted original photo ID.
• Your own pen, pencil and eraser.
• A transparent bottle of drinking water.

Open footwear, such as sandals or chappals, is advised in the 2026 guidelines. You should report early enough for the required screening, especially when wearing clothing or articles that need additional checks.

JEE Advanced Exam: Important Instructions During the Exam

These are some of the important instructions that students should take care of while appearing in the JEE Advanced exam.

• Carry a printed admit card and one accepted original photo ID: Aadhaar, a school/college/institute ID, driving licence, voter ID, passport, PAN card or a notarized certificate with photograph.
• Identity verification can take time. If additional formalities are required, that time is not automatically added to your examination.
• For the standard 2026 schedule, Paper 1 ran from 09:00 to 12:00 IST and Paper 2 from 14:30 to 17:30 IST. Both papers were compulsory.
• Centers opened from 07:00 IST. Entry after the start of either paper was not permitted. Follow the reporting time on your admit card and any approved compensatory-time arrangements.
• Remain in the examination hall for the required duration and follow the invigilator’s instructions about leaving.
• Use the supplied scribble pad, write the required details and return it after the paper. Do not bring loose rough-work paper.
• Follow any health instructions issued for your sitting. The 2026 brochure did not impose the old blanket pandemic mask-and-sanitizer requirement.
• Unfair means can lead to disqualification and other action under the applicable rules.

So, these are the important instructions students need to follow if they want to appear in the exam. Students are advised to follow the above instructions strictly.
