At first it was charged only on the value of the steel in each product. An April 2, 2026 proclamation reworked those steel tariffs, which now generally apply to a product’s full value at rates set by its category. How much that adds to a given fridge depends on where it is built and how it is classified.
The IEEPA ruling didn’t touch them. The February 20, 2026 ruling against the IEEPA tariffs left fridges untouched, because the Section 232 steel tariffs come from a different law.
Smart fridges also carry memory chips, whose prices rose across electronics in 2026. That matters for models with a screen in the door and very little for a basic fridge.
What to Expect This Black Friday
Retailers haven’t announced their 2026 Black Friday appliance sales yet. Last year’s pattern suggests this:
- Likely: store-wide appliance sales at Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s and the brand stores, with the biggest dollar cuts on French door and smart fridges.
- Possible: smaller cuts on basic top-freezer models, which have the least room to discount.
- Unlikely: fridge prices falling back to where they were before the 2025 steel tariffs.
Before you buy, check these 3 things, because they decide whether a deal is real:
- Size: measure the space, the doorways and the swing of the doors. A counter-depth fridge holds less than a standard-depth one.
- Delivery and haul-away: delivery, installation and old-fridge removal fees can wipe out a $200 discount.
