Worked example

Now try a value where the scales meet: -40°C. Multiplying by 9/5 gives -72, and adding 32 gives -40°F. This is the one temperature with the same numerical value on both scales.
How to read the result
A temperature value and a temperature change are not converted in exactly the same way. A rise of 10°C equals a rise of 18°F, but 10°C itself equals 50°F. The offset applies to a point on the scale, not to the size of an interval.
Kelvin and Celsius have equal-sized increments. A change of 1 K is the same size as a change of 1°C. Only their zero points differ. Fahrenheit uses smaller degrees, so a 1°C interval spans 1.8°F.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding 32 before multiplying when converting Celsius to Fahrenheit. The order changes the result.
- Using 273 instead of 273.15 when the problem expects scientific precision.
- Writing °K. The SI style is K, without the degree symbol.
- Converting a temperature difference as though it were an absolute temperature.
How to check a temperature conversion
Check a conversion by running it backward. If 25°C becomes 77°F, converting 77°F back must return 25°C. Reference points are useful too: 0°C is 32°F, 100°C is 212°F, and -40 has the same numerical value on both scales.
Kelvin cannot be below absolute zero. Celsius values below -273.15°C and Fahrenheit values below -459.67°F are physically invalid. A Kelvin value is written with K, not a degree symbol.

These formulas convert scale values, not heat, energy, or “how hot something feels.” Heat transfer also depends on mass, material, specific heat capacity, airflow, humidity, and time.
For clinical, laboratory, or industrial work, the instrument accuracy may matter more than the arithmetic. Converting a reading to six decimal places does not create precision the thermometer never measured.
