All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi
Founded by Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, India’s first Health Minister, in 1956, AIIMS has been ranked no. 1 constantly over the years, by several organisations and publications. Given that the hospital treats over 3.5 million patients a year, the clinical exposure available to students is unrivalled.
Functioning directly under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the institute charges subsidised tuition fees and has recorded several achievements under its name.

Established in 1958, the college is named after freedom fighter Maulana Azad and is a government medical college affiliated to the Delhi University. Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), New Delhi

Affiliated with Delhi University, the institute has come a long way since its establishment. LHMC has one of the oldest medical libraries in India. Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune
Affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health and Sciences, AFMC was established in 1948 and is the first medical college initiated and managed by an Armed forces Unit in Asia. The college provides for a complete set of specialists and super specialist doctors in the Armed forces and is listed among the top medical colleges in India.
Admission to AFMC takes place through NEET Examination and the students are liable to serve the Indian Armed forces for a minimum of 7 years. Founded in 1960 under the leadership of K.N. Udupa, the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) is one of the six institutes of the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. JIPMER is one of the institutes of national importance under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Founded in 1823, it has a campus spread out over 195 acres of land and presently has more than 300 faculty members, more than 700 resident physicians, and more than 800 administrative, nursing, and support staff. Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh
Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College is the constituent medical college of Aligarh Muslim University, which is situated in Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh). The Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) was established in 2001 at the Safdarjung Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in India dating back to World War II. It is affiliated to the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. Within a few years of its inception, the college became one of the most coveted destinations for aspiring Indian medicos. Grant Government Medical College, Mumbai
The Grant Government Medical College was founded in 1845 and is one of the oldest South Asian medical institutions in existence. It is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and has been regularly ranked among the top ten medical colleges in India. Its campus is the largest among all the medical colleges in Mumbai, spread out over 44 acres in the Byculla area of Southern Mumbai. The college’s infrastructure includes well-equipped laboratories, hostels, lecture theatres, departmental museum, and a huge central library with over 45,000 medical text and reference books. Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai
The Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College (GSMC) and the King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital are amongst the most renowned institutions in India dealing with medical education and patient care. Founded in 1926, it trains nearly 2,000 students in undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-speciality medical courses. It has around 390 staff physicians and 550 resident doctors with a 1,800 bedded hospital which treats about 1.8 million outpatients and 85,000 inpatients every year.

Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh
The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Chandigarh was founded in 1991 with an intake of 50 students. Today, it admits 150 MBBS students every year and also offers postgraduate courses (MD/MS/M.Phil.) in various surgical and medical subjects. In 2019, Outlook India ranked it 17th among the medical colleges of India. It has a 36 acres campus with a dedicated college building and five blocks of hospital. It is affiliated to the Punjab University.
St. John’s Medical College, Bengaluru
St. John’s Medical College, founded in 1963, is a private religious minority medical college and hospital located in Bengaluru. Every year, it accepts 150 students for the undergraduate MBBS course and 100 postgraduate students (20 diploma and 80 MD) to various medical specialities. Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata
The Calcutta Medical College, officially known as Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, was established in 1835 by Lord William Bentinck. It holds the distinction of being the first institution to teach its courses in English, and the second oldest medical college to offer a degree in European medicine in Asia. The hospital associated with this college is the largest hospital in the state of West Bengal. It is affiliated to the West Bengal University of Medical Sciences, and offers three undergraduate degrees as of now. In 2019, it was ranked 19th among Indian medical colleges by Outlook India.
Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Wardha
Founded in 1969 by Dr. Sushila Nayyar, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Wardha is India’s first rural medical college. It is located in a small village known as Sevagram, about 8 kilometres away from the city of Wardha. The institute admits 100 students every year for its undergraduate MBBS course. It also offers postgraduate (MD/MS) degrees in most important disciplines of medical science, diploma courses in medicine and surgery, as well as various research programmes.
MGIMS is associated with the Kasturba Hospital, which was founded in 1944 by Sushila Nayar, the personal physician of Mahatma Gandhi himself. From a 770 bed hospital, it has grown into a teaching hospital with almost 1000 beds today and provides tertiary healthcare facilities to patients from rural areas. The institute is known for following Gandhian principles, including its strict vegetarianism policy and prohibition of alcohol in the campus.
