Here’s how I use it:

MacUpdater was my go-to for years. Then it shut down. Classic story: indie app, couldn’t sustain the business model, gone.

Latest picked up the slack. It’s free, open-source, and does exactly what I need: tells me when my non-App Store apps have updates available.

Why I switched (beyond MacUpdater dying):

  • Completely free. No subscription, no “pro” tier, no hidden costs.
  • Open source means it’s not going anywhere. If the developer stops maintaining it, someone else can pick it up.

.mp4? .mkv? .flv from 2008? VLC doesn’t flinch.

Why I keep it installed:

  • Handles every format I throw at it — even oddball files from old hard drives
  • Allows precise playback speed control (useful for watching tutorials or talks)
  • Built-in subtitle support that actually works
  • Great audio tweaks and equalizer options when you’re using studio monitors or AirPods Pro

It’s not the prettiest app. But that’s never been the point. It just works. No adware, no popups, no nonsense. VLC is still the king of universal playback.

iMovie

Installed, Not Often Used (But Still There When Needed)

I don’t use iMovie daily. Heck, sometimes it doesn’t see the light of day for weeks. But when I need to stitch together a quick explainer, a product demo, or a basic edit, it’s right there — free and capable.
