When it comes to blogging, the most important step by far is planning and optimizing what you want to say. This is a blogging how to necessity!
If you want to get in front of your readers with all the material you post on your blog site you are going to have to get to know them a little bit. What do I mean by this? Well, you will have to pretend you are a consumer of whatever it is you are about to talk about.
In my personal opinion, I like to find the keywords I want to target first then create the content, but I do know some people that feel the other way around works better for them. It’s all a matter of what you feel works best.
Table of Contents
1. Find a Niche to Target
The first thing you are going to want to do is to figure out the niche you want to target. I have written an article on how to find a profitable niche for your blog. Try to read it quickly. To keep it simple we will use the overused example of a dog trainer. Maybe you are a specialist with one breed of dog, let’s say Labrador Retrievers. Now you have broken down your niche a little more, it’s no longer just dog trainers, now it’s people looking for dog trainers for their Labrador Retriever.
One extra step you may take is picking your location as-well, (but Google has gone ahead and taken care of most of that for you already with a recent upgrade that connects your IP location to the most popular search results).
This how-to step is key for making sure you get the most laser-targeted audience finding you and your blog posts.
2. Find Keywords
Now that you have broken down your niche it’s important that we find some keywords that your target audience is searching for.
There are many tools for this, the most common free tool is SEMrush. All you need is a free account and you can sign in with that to begin searching keyword ideas. Tools like this offer you all the info needed in order to make decisions on what words to use in your blog content.
You will more than likely want to think outside the box when doing this section of your blogging how to planning. If you can think of different ways that people might be looking for services then take a shot with it and see what kind of traction you can get.
See my guide on “how to master keyword research?” for more detail on this.
3. Build Content
You have now broken down your niche, picked some keywords, now it’s time to use all that information and build content.
So the final step we are going to go over in this post is going to be how to create laser targeted blog posts that have a much better chance to rank on the search engines.
Title of your post
Lets begin with the title of your post. You want to make sure that you can integrate the main keyword you want to write about in the blog post title. The reason why this is important is not only because the search engine spiders that crawl the web for relevant information are looking for it, but also because it is the first thing that people see when you pop up as a search result.
Writing Content with Keyword in it
The next thing you want to make sure of is that you are able to authentically place your keyword into the post at a density of about 2%. This means that if you have a 500-word post you will want the keyword in there about 10 times.
You will also want a featured image with every blog post. This has become a blogging how to skill because with some algorithm upgrade from Google and other search engines, they can now read all the information you have typed up in the background of each picture. Most of this information is unnoticed by the readers, but the search spiders read it.
Key Point: Make sure you title your images with your keyword as well as have alternative text (ALT text) with the keyword as well.
Viola! Now you are done with the planning and optimizing thing. Make sure to write a great article. See this documentation on what is a blog to understand how many words you should write.
