JEE Main 2024 Exam: Eligibility, Syllabus, Pattern and Guide

JEE Main is a computer-based online exam conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) for students who want to pursue undergraduate courses in prestigious universities in India.

JEE main examination is explicitly conducted in 2 sessions every year:

  • January
  • April

The candidates can take the exam in either of them. They can also choose to appear in both exam sessions, and the exam conducting authority will consider the best of two NTA scores and prepare the merit list.

JEE Main 2024 comprises of 3 papers.

  • Paper 1 will be for students who want to pursue B.tech.
  • Paper 2 will be for students who want to pursue B. Arch courses.
  • Paper 3 will be for B.Arch courses.

NTA recently introduced a new exam pattern for the upcoming JEE main 2024 exam. In the meantime, the application and registration process for the January session of the JEE Main exam will start in September, and for the April session, it's usually somewhere in the month of February.

Students appearing for their class 12th exam must have Physics and Maths as their compulsory subjects to be eligible to appear for the JEE Main 2024 exam.

2022-23 pass-out candidates are also eligible to appear for the Exam. Nevertheless, one should fulfill the JEE Main eligibility criteria in order to appear for the Exam. Otherwise, your application will be rejected.

The difficulty level of the JEE Main exam lies between moderate to tough. If we just take the previous year question papers into consideration, then the Chemistry section is usually the easiest while physics being the moderate level and math can be considered to be the toughest.

But in comparison to the JEE Advanced, JEE main questions can be found as straightforward and NCERT syllabus based with a few tricky questions to test individuals' understanding of the concept and their analytical skills.

What is JEE Main, and why should you take it?

JEE Main is a standardized online exam that is conducted across the different states in India. This is conducted for students who want to pursue undergraduate courses in some of the best engineering colleges in India, such as IITs, NITs, etc.

The reasons to take this exam are:

  • JEE Main is the only platform for engineering aspirants to get admitted into some prestigious technical institutions in India.
  • JEE main is the first step for an IIT aspirant in order to get admitted into IITs and other top colleges in India through JEE advanced.

JEE Main 2024 Registration

Usually the Registration portal for the JEE Main January session opens in the month of September.

Aspiring candidates can register for the exam online by visiting JEE Main official website. Submit the registration fee, and it's strongly suggested to check your personal and academic details thoroughly before submitting the application.

How to fill up JEE Main 2024 Application form?

There are a few things candidates should keep in mind before filling the application form.

  • Any application form other than the online mode will be rejected immediately.
  • Only one application can be submitted by a Candidate, and multiple submissions will be rejected.

Follow the steps given below to submit Applications form:

Step 1: Visit JEE Main's official website (jeemain.nta.nic.in)

Step 2: Register for the online application form.

Note down the application number as it's required later to generate a password and for future purposes.

Step 3: Fill out all the details that are required in the Form.

Step 4: Upload a photograph and scanned copy of your documents with signature.

Step 5: Pay online registration fees

There're two methods to pay –online mode and offline mode.

  • Offline mode: Download the e-challan and transfer the registration fee at any branch of ICICI, Canara Bank, or syndicate bank.
  • Online Mode: pay using a debit card, credit card, PAYTM, UPI, Google pay, Net banking, and Cash cards.

Step 6: Take a printout of the acknowledgment.

Keep these things Ready before you fill the Form.

  • You need A PC with a good internet connection.
  • Details of qualification.
  • Scanned copy of your photograph in JPG/JPEG format with image size between 10 kb - 200 kb. Note that the picture has to be clear.
  • Digital copy of the student's signature in JPG/JPEG format. Note that the image size should be between 4 kb - 30 kb.
  • A working e-mail id.
  • Make sure to have a valid mobile number for confirmation.
  • A printer to print the confirmation page.

NTA also provides the facility of a one-time correction to make some additional changes in the registration form. While others have to be paid

Note: As per the official notification, on JEE Main correction window, you are allowed to switch from pen-paper based mode to computer-based mode, but you won't be able to change the way from computer-based to pen and paper-based method.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria

Age Limit

There is no age limit to take JEE Main exam, but candidates must note that IITs set specific age criteria for admissions.

Qualifying exams

A candidate should qualify their class 12 or any equivalent exam such as a 2-year pre-university exam, senior secondary school examination, or higher secondary certificate Vocational examination.

Eligibility Criteria for admissions in IITs and NITs

Candidates must obtain at least 75% marks(for the reserved category it is 65% marks) in their Class 12 board exams and be within the top 20 percentile of their respective boards.

Qualifying Marks

There is no minimum pass percentage, so any applicant who has passed 12th board exams or other equivalent exams can appear for JEE Main exam.

JEE Main 2024 exam pattern

Knowing exam patterns is very important for the smooth preparation of JEE as it helps students to get a clear idea of marking Scheme, question distribution, marks allotted to each section, and the exam duration.

As mentioned above, a new pattern has been introduced to the JEE main 2024, which consists of three papers.

  • Paper 1 is for the students who are for the students who want to pursue B.E. or B. Tech courses in colleges like IIT, NIT, and GFTIs.
  • Paper 2 is for students who want to pursue B. Arch.
  • Paper 3 is for B. Planning courses.

Students are generally advised to get a complete overview of the paper pattern to make a suitable study plan and strategy.

  • JEE Main paper 1 comprises of Physics, chemistry, and math.
  • JEE Main paper 2 comprises of Maths, Aptitude and Drawing test.
  • JEE Main paper 3 consists of Maths, Aptitude, and planning based questions.

The students can appear for any one or both the papers. As of marking pattern has been changed. This time there are 75 questions instead of 90 questions in JEE Main. Total marks allotted are 300.

All papers except paper two drawing sections are entirely computer-based, whereas the drawing section is conducted offline in pen and paper-based mode.

JEE Main Paper 1 marking Scheme

  • this paper will consist of 75 questions (300 marks) with 25 questions from each subject( physics, maths, and chemistry)
  • Four marks will be allocated for every correct answer given, and one mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
  • No marks are given for unattempted questions.
  • In a numerically based question, four marks will be awarded for every right answer, and there is no negative marking given for wrong answers.

JEE Main Paper 2 marking Scheme

  • Aptitude test will consist of a total of 50 questions (200 marks) math section will consist of 25 questions (100 marks), and the drawing section will consist of 2 questions (100 marks).
  • Four marks are granted for every correct answer, and one mark deducted for every incorrect answer.
  • In a numerically based question, four marks will be awarded for every right answer, and there is no negative marking given for wrong answers.

How to check JEE Main results online?

  1. Open JEE main results portal at http://jeemain.nta.nic.in/
  2. Enter your date of birth and the roll number.
  3. Click on the submit button.

As soon as you enter submit, the results will be displayed on the screen. Download the copy of your scoreboard for counseling and admissions.
