Make a stylus with Aluminum foil and a pencil

Pick up some Aluminum foil and cut a nice, neat sheet of it. It need not be perfect in geometry. Take a pencil or a pen, and wrap the foil around it. The best way is to place the pen at a corner, parallel to the diagonal, and roll it. You can fold the excess foil back and use some tape to hold it in place. Your pen is now a shiny stylus and it didn’t cost you more than a dollar to make! Use it to type, swipe or doodle on your Snapchat photos like a pro!

DIY lighting with a bottle of water and flash

flash waterDo you need to have a little light in the room but the bulb’s broken? Or perhaps it’s a blackout. Just grab hold of a bottle of water. Turn on your flash torchlight, and place it facing to the ceiling. All you need to do is put the bottle on top, and the bottle will disperse the concentrated torchlight into the room for some mild lighting, enough to find your way around without stumbling.

Use a Drop of water as a magnifying lens

water drop on cameraCorrectly placing a drop of water on the lens will make your phone turn into a microscope! The usual zoom function makes things shaky and also pixelates the content. Instead, just lay a tiny drop of water on the lens to make a temporary zoom lens. The tinier the drop, the bigger the zoom.

Speaker in glass

For a quick boost for the music at house parties, just put your phone in a whiskey flask. The repeated reflection of sound amplifies the sound, almost like a loudspeaker cone. Keep your speaker at the lower side for better results. This can work with metal glasses and china cups too, but plastic cups might ruin the sound quality. This works great for parties in the lawn or out in the open.

Keep your earphones tidy and tangle free by wrapping them around a pen

pencil smartphone earphoneYou probably carry a pen or a pencil in your bag or purse, and that is all you need to keep your earphones tangle free. Every time you are done using your earphones, just wrap them around in a spiral around the pen and keep it inside. Keep the spiral going in the same direction and don’t overlap the cord for best results. You’ll benefit from the coils the cord develops in the future, since it becomes so much easier to carry.

Never fumble for your cords by attaching it to your desk with monkey clips

mokey clipsThe problem with most workstations is that the wires and cables all lie in a jumble at your feet. You don’t want to waste time fumbling in that mass when your phone or laptop is at 10% charge. So organise them. Get monkey clips and put them on the corner of your table. Thread the cables through the holders and they should stay right in place.

Tip: The holders are removable. And if your cords keep slipping, rubber bands can hold them in place.

Use an empty thread spool to wrap your cords into neat containers to carry

Put your phone on airplane mode to charge it quicker

smartphone chargingWhen your phone is on Airplane mode, it is effectively closed. It doesn’t run most processes in the background, it doesn’t consume data; it just stays on and plays the apps you’re running. This can work in your favor when you want to cut charge depletion. Plug in your phone and let the device charge on airplane mode, and you’ll shave off a few minutes from the time to full charge.

Transfer files faster through WiFi networks

pexels-photo-196656Bluetooth can be slow and cables can be messy. So use your WiFi instead. You can download a data sharing app like SHAREit, Xender and many more to connect you and your friends over a WiFi network and you can send and receive files through it much faster and easier. The process works even faster when you don’t have an external WiFi network to bank of, since the network the app builds is exclusive to you and your friends. It does this using your hotspot, but you don’t need to spend any internet balance for it.

Use magnets of dashboard and inside the case to make a DIY phone holder

holder phoneWhen you need to keep your phone in front of your eyes when you’re driving, holding it in your hands is not really a good idea. It’s not safe, and it’s also not very comfortable. So just get two strong button magnets from the store. Use some strong glue to fix one on the dashboard at a comfortable position. Then get a plain phone case, and glue the other magnet to its centre. Make sure the side facing outside is the one that is attracted to the face facing outwards on the dashboard. Then, just put your phone on the board and you can enjoy easy access, whether it be attending calls (only do this with your car parked!) or accessing GPS navigation. You can also rotate the phone on its centre. It’s much easier than cutting a rubber mat and fixing it, and much cheaper than spending a lot of money to buy a fancy holder.

There are probably a few more ideas you can think of. There is no dearth of hacks you can score with everyday items around you. Which one are you going to try first?
