How to Choose a Profitable Niche for Your Blog?

I receive queries from aspiring bloggers that they really want to start a blog but cannot decide on a profitable niche.

This happens to all of us. Happened even to me.

Choosing a profitable niche is a challenge.

If you make a wrong decision and start blogging about something that looks good, feels good but doesn’t pay well — you are destined to fail.

In this guide, I will help you explore options and help you figure out the best niches you can choose from.

But before that, let me share my personal experience with niches.

In 2009, when I started my blog, I was primarily focused on writing personal thoughts and visions.

Boy, such a fool I was.

No proper niche, no keyword research, no monetary exposure, and no future, but I kept writing and publishing.

After a year, I understood that this wasn’t the way.

Thankfully I learn quickly. After a year or less — I moved to study notes and education niche(s). These two are some of the most profitable niches in the market.

This changed everything.

I now make thousands of dollars from this blog. I have also pivoted to other niches like business, education, tech and blogging to make sure that I cover the most I know. My blog is a multiniche blog and covers a range of topics now. But it had never have been such a thing if I hadn't discovered about the niches and how they work.

I feel both proud and happy about the decisions that I made. But most of it was luck. There were no useful guides available on how to choose a profitable niche.

I ran my whole blogging business on trial and error.

Things are different now. You can just search on Google and find hundreds of top-quality guides on choosing a profitable niche.

I have attempted a similar thing in this article.I am not claiming that this guide will be better than others, but it will be no less and certainly will be an eye-opener for aspiring bloggers.

When to decide a niche for your blog?

This is kind of a confusing question. Do I need to choose a niche before creating a blog, or should I just create a blog and then (later) decide on a niche?

Well, you can do either.

  1. The first case is great if you are going to focus on a microniche (mostly affiliate/download websites).
  2. The second case is great if you write about multiple topics (like my blog, such sites are called multiniche sites).

So whenever you want. I won't judge you. If you already have a blog, keep reading. If you don't have one, what is stopping you? Blogs are cheap and easy to start now. I have a simple guide on starting a blog — be sure to check that.

Coming to the main topic.

  • You are looking to find a niche to run your blog.
  • You are confused between multiple niche ideas, and you are unable to decide on which is better and which one is not.

In this article, I will try to answer all the questions you have. Here are the things that you are going to learn:

  1. You will learn how to choose a profitable blogging niche in 2022.
  2. All your doubts on how to monetize your niche will be cleared after you finish reading this article.
  3. You will find a list of the best profitable niches right now.
  4. I will answer all your doubts on how much money you can make with a niche.
  5. I will also tell you about the different niche ideas and how those can be monetized.

Let's start.

Think of your blog as a business.

The purpose of every business is to earn money. Right?

To earn money, you need to things that are profitable — i.e., things that pay more than what you invest on those.

It is very easy to start a business. But making it profitable is not easy at all. As in the business, you need a product or multiple products to sell; in blogging, you need a niche or multiple niches to write about.

Was it easy to understand? If no, read that again.

Wrong products fail — businesses fail. Similarly, wrong niches fail — blogs fail.

In business, as market research is required to effectively sell a product — keyword research is required to effectively sell a niche. I will talk about keyword research later. For now, let's just focus on the first part — choosing a profitable product niche to write about on your blog.

Why Should I Choose the Right Niche?

46% of new bloggers fail in blogging due to just one reason — choosing the wrong niche. Other 17% fail due to lack of keyword research while writing articles in those niches. You see how important it is to select a good niche.

"Niche, profitable niche, good niche, wrong niche. Enough of this niche thing. I don't even know what niche is."

Okay, okay. Let's start with the basics first.

What is a Niche?

Niche Illustration

In general English, a niche stands for a place, position, function, or forte.

That means a particular set of knowledge is required to write about a specific niche. These niches can be related to a geographic area, a specific industry, an age group, a language, or an interest.

In easy words, "niche is the market you are going to target using your blog".

A niche can also be segmented into more sub-categories such as sub-niches under the main niche, and under that sub-niche, there could also be some sub-niches.

Let understand this with an example.

Suppose you are a health expert and you know a lot of things about healthy diets, especially Keto diets.

In this example, Health is your Industry or primary niche. "Healthy Diet" is your mini niche. Since Healthy Diet can be achieved using many methods, including "Keto Diet" — Keto Diet is your microniche.

There is no limit to how many segments a niche or microniche can be divided. Any niche can have several layers.

In the above example, you see 3 layers of the Health niche but this can be continued to various levels. Keto Diet can have layers like Keto Diet for Beginners, Keto Diet for Adults, etc.

All these niches under Health Industry (also a niche) can also be called sub-niches. But don't get into too much into all these definitions.

Let's understand why you cannot directly target a large niche or Industry. I will also explain why you should pick one or more microniches in the next section.

Why Should I Pick a Microniche?

Suppose that you started a blog on the health niche without specifically targeting any microniches. Would you rank on a keyword like Health? No. You will not. Ranking on a keyword with such difficulty is next to impossible as there are already 10-100 high authority websites ranking on this keyword. Not just this, the other 100000 websites are already trying to rank for the same keyword and they are way older & way better than yours.

Above everything, remember that it is very tough to outrank high-authority websites on keywords like these. You are going to need keywords that are of low competition and you have some chances to rank on those.

What I meant to say is that Google is not going to rank your website over the old website if you target the whole industry in your blog.

Therefore, being a newbie, I will strongly recommend you start a sub-sub-niche or a microniche blog. Microniche blogs can be ranked easily. These microniche blogs have articles that are based around longtail keywords.

In the above example, Keto Diet for beginners can have keywords like the best keto diet for beginners in 2022 and so on. The volume (number of searches) is relatively low for microniche keywords, but since the competition is also on the lower side, you can gain sufficient and targeted traffic without much work.

This traffic that comes on your blog will be highly convertible. This is because you are talking about what your readers are specifically looking for.

Once you have covered one microniche to some good extent, you can choose to try other niches as well. Writing about multiple niches will increase the range of your blog and make your blog a much bigger cash cow.

I hope you have understood the basics of selecting a profitable niche for your blog. Let's see why it is important to choose a profitable niche/microniche and why do such niches benefit you.

Benefits of Choosing a Profitable Microniche

There are several benefits of choosing a profitable niche or microniche. A microniche can:

  1. Attract a Specific audience.
  2. Make your blog a cash cow
  3. Help you concentrate your efforts
  4. Easily make you an expert
  5. Conveniently make your blogging life successful

Let me tell you all these in detail.

Attract Specific Audience

As I mentioned earlier, by targeting a profitable niche or microniche, you can drive targeted audiences on your blog. The rest you need is to optimize your content for Google. Once you start getting enough traffic, you can start monetizing with Google Adsense or its alternatives and affiliate marketing.

Make Your Blog A Cash Cow

Micro niche blogs have the most conversion rate. With less work, you can make more money with your blog. By targeting microniche, you make sure that only interested audiences will land on your website, and they are more likely to get converted into sales.

Help to Concentrate Your Efforts

If you start a blog on the microniche, then you will work with more concentration. Since you are publishing about a microniche — not a lot of diversion will be required. You will put your efforts in the right direction, which helps you to grow your blog faster.

Easily make you an expert

Since you are investing your time and efforts in developing content in a certain microniche, you can easily master your ways. By the time you spend a year in your niche, you will be done with almost everything that is there in that specific niche. Even if you didn't know a thing about the niche, at the end of the year you will know about that more than anyone else in your neighborhood.

When I started a microniche blog on Dropshipping with Amazon — I knew only the basics about dropshipping. A year later, I was an expert.

Conveniently make your blogging life successful

Since there is a lesser competition about your niche in the market — people in your area of expertise will start to recognize your efforts easily. You will start getting blog mentions, service recommendations, website links, tweets, and more. These are the things that a successful blogger wants (including money).

In no time you will be a known name and way above your competition.

Now as you have understood the importance of choosing the microniche for a blog so let's understand how to choose it.

How to Choose a Profitable Blog Niche?

This is a 6 steps process:

  1. Check your passion
  2. Understand the trends
  3. Identify the needs and the problems of your audience
  4. Do keyword research
  5. Shortlist some niches
  6. Write 20 blog articles on your selected niches

Let's dive into all these steps in detail.

Shortlist some niches

Try to answer some questions and make an opinion on which topics you want to write about.

Ask yourself some questions as follows:

  • On which things you spend most of the time?
  • What kind of magazines do you read?
  • About which things are you searching on Google regularly?
  • Which videos do you watch on youtube?
  • What do you do in your free time?
  • Your role model belongs to which industry?
  • What topics do you love to learn?

If you answer these questions, then believe me, you will end up with more than 5 or 10 niche ideas to start a blog.

Check Your Passion

Make a list of niches about which you are passionate you may have done this before and if not then do it. If you started your blog about a niche about which you were not passionate, it is highly likely that you will quit blogging in a couple of months if not weeks.

Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all, don't let anyone limit your dreams. — Donovan Bailey

Once you have prepared your list of passionate niches, then you have to check the trends of those niches.

You can check the trends with the help of using the Google Trends tool. This tool will let you know about the trends of the keywords or niche.

Check out this video to understand how Google trends works. You can also try to see the new and popular keywords that are in trend.

You can also use a tool like Ahrefs or SEMrush to understand the trend of some keywords. Ahrefs costs $7 for the first week, and SEMrush offers a week trial for free.

Once you are done with the trends analysis, you will know whether a topic is viable to writing or not. It would be best to choose a topic/keyword/niche with sufficient volume and low competition as your niche.

Identify Problems Of People In Your Niche

Once you have checked the trend of your niche, you have to look for the audience's problems in your niche. You have to look for the problems because if there is any problem, then users and advertisers will be ready to pay for its solution.

For example, if I person does not know how to design a beautiful landing page of the blog, then you can tell him the solution that they can use to make attractive landing pages for your blog. This is where you are going to make money if you are running an affiliate blog.

And this just a give-and-take process. You are giving him the solution to his problem, and you will get some commission in return.

If you don't know how to find problems of the audience in your niche then you can find it with the following methods:

  • Join Communities Related To Your Niche: By joining the communities, like Reddit & Facebook, related to your niche, you will get into the community of the people who are searching about your niche. Once you entered that community then you will get to know about the problems to write articles. You will not only get to know about the problems to write a blog, but you will also get to know about the solution to that problem when someone comments on that post. Isn't it so easy to find the problems of readers in your niche with their solutions?
  • Use Google Auto Suggest: You have seen that it automatically starts recommending some options whenever you try to search for a term on Google. These are the search terms that most people are searching about, and whenever Google gets to know that the user is searching about that term, it starts recommending the most searched terms. Google does this to enhance the user search experience. You can also check the "Search-related to_______" section under all the search results.

Check The Profitability In Your Niche

You have to check whether your niche is profitable or not to earn money with your blog. Can you show some ads on your website in near future?

To check this you have to look for is there any advertisement running in your niche. If you find that people are running advertisements in your niche, then that niche is definitely profitable.

Because nobody invests money to promote anything unless or until it is profitable. You can check for the advertisement on Google, Facebook, and Quora. This is one of the best ways to check profitability in any niche.

Check Monetization Methods

Once you get to know that there are some chances of getting your articles ranked in the top search results, then you have to check whether there is any method of monetization of your blog.

If you selected a niche to start a blog but it does not have any kind of monetization option, then you will end up wasting your time because you will be not able to make even a single penny even if you rank your articles in the top search results.

There are different methods of monetization of your blog.

  • Google Adsense
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • You can sell own products or services
  • Sell your courses

And more.

There are many ways you can make money with your blog.

Write About 20 Articles on Your Niche

If you are going to take your blog for a long run, you will have to give it a trial run as well. Write around 20 articles related to your niche and wait for the results. If you found the results even a bit motivating— continue with your writing and marketing style. Otherwise, make some changes and publish 10 more posts using the popular content templates. If even this doesn't work for you, you must be doing something horribly wrong.

  • Make a list of niches you are passionate about.
  • Check the trend of every niche.
  • Find the Problems of your audience in every niche.
  • Analyze your competitor ranking.
  • Check the profitability of every niche.
  • Check the monetization methods in every niche.
  • Check the willingness to pay of your audience.
  • Do a trial run by publishing 20 articles, followed by 10 articles.
