There was huge anticipation ahead of this year’s IPL auction because it was Mega Auction time again. Effectively, this is a reset button. Teams can only retain four players, which disrupts the status quo and creates a wave of opportunities for the IPL 2022 sides that want a complete rebuild.
Added to the mix, the BCCI confirmed that two new teams – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants – will be participating in the forthcoming IPL 2022 season, also called Tata IPL 15. Understandably, fans of the league and enthusiasts that enjoy betting on cricket pay close attention to the auction’s results to see who they think are the strongest teams.
While power rankings tend to differ between experts, we’ve compiled a general consensus based on each franchise’s performance in the Mega Auction and the players that they’ve retained. Here you can find our team rankings from weakest to strongest.
10. Mumbai Indians
MI appeared to only have one intention for this auction, and that was to secure the services of the exciting youngster Ishan Kishan. After achieving that, the rest of the auction was slightly underwhelming, which was capped off with the signing of Jofra Archer, who has confirmed he won’t be playing in the 2022 tournament.
9. Sunrisers Hyderabad
Although the Sunrisers retained Kane Williamson, they let go of three experienced players in David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, and Rashid Khan. SRH’s most expensive purchase in the Mega Auction was Nicholas Pooran, who cost INR 10.75 crores.
8. Rajasthan Royals
There’s a lot of debate over RR’s performance in the auction. Having already retained Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sanju Samson, there was a good opportunity to strengthen. Among the 21 players they bought are Trent Boult, R Ashwin, and Prasidh Krishna. It remains to be seen if RR’s middle order is strong enough to go all the way.
7. Delhi Capitals
It’s widely agreed that DC had neither a good nor bad IPL Auction. They retained Rishabh Pant, who will captain the side. They purchased 20 new players, including David Warner and Mitchell Stark. While there’s no doubting the quality of this pairing, neither set the 2021 IPL on fire, so they could be potentially risky signings.
6. Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR retained four players and bought in another 21, including Sam Billings, Alex Hales, Pat Cummins, and Shreyas Iyer, who will captain the side. There seems to be a good balance throughout for KKR, so one to keep an eye on in the betting.
5. Punjab Kings
PBKS only kept two players from their 2021 squad while snapping up 23 new faces in the Auction. Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow, Kagiso Rabada, and Shikhar Dhawan are all quality signings that could make the Punjab Kings real contenders in 2022.
4. Lucknow Super Giants
As another new team, LSG were able to draft KL Rahul, Ravi Bishnoi, and Marcus Stoinis before the Auction. They proceeded with adding more key players, including Deepak Honda, Quinton de Kock, Jason Holder, Avesh Khan, and Krunal Pandya, to name a few. From top to bottom, they look relatively strong.
3. Bangalore Royal Challengers
Unsurprisingly, Bangalore Royal Challengers retained Indian superstar Virat Kohli, along with Glenn Maxwell and Siraj. In the Mega Auction, 19 new players came in. These included Wanindu Hasaranga, Josh Hazelwood, Harshal Patel, and Faf du Plessis. With a good mix of experience and youth, Bangalore are in a strong position this season.
2. Gujarat Titans
As one of the new teams, we’re dealing with an unknown quantity in GT. Overall, they had a respectable auction, bringing in Jason Roy, Lockie Ferguson, Dominic Drakes, Mohammed Shami, and David Miller, among others. A question mark is over the top order, as other IPL sides look stronger.
1. Chennai Super Kings
MS Dhoni will lead the Super kings in the IPL 2022, that is for sure. They added some top-drawer players to their squads like Dwayne Bravo, Devon Conway, Deepak Chahar, Mitchell Santner and Ambati Rayudu. Certainly, CSK will be among the betting favorites and one of the teams to beat.
