Experience Ghost blogging platform on WordPress

Ghost vs WordPress

Ghost or WordPress : Which is better?

Ghost is a neat publishing focused blogging platform. Ghost allows you to write and publish your own blog, giving you the tools to make it easy and even fun to do. While WordPress works on a multi dimensional philosophy and not just limited to publishing. I was excited to try Ghost when it first released. I thought that it would be a little more nice than WordPress. But definitely, it didn’t come that strong. I am not saying that Ghost has failed to accomplish its theory. Yes it’s different and someway better than WordPress but on an a creative’s point of view it falls short to WP.

Ghost was launched with Markdown writing and a beautiful minimal interface in mind. But was that a new thing to WP? No. WordPress.com included Markdown editing in Visual editor and comments at first. And then released it for WordPress.org through Jetpack plugin. Talking about beauty, WordPress users had colorful dashboards in beta. Definitely, Ghost is not worth shifting if you are already pleased with WordPress.

Markdown lets you compose posts and comments with links, lists, and other styles using regular characters and punctuation marks. Markdown is used by writers and bloggers who want a quick and easy way to write rich text, without having to take their hands off the keyboard, and without learning a lot of complicated codes and shortcuts.$

Experiencing Ghost Blogging on WordPress

In a certain case, if you want to experience Ghost blogging platform without leaving WP, there are ways to do that. WordPress repo has some excellent plugins and themes that copy almost every element of Ghost and still keeps WordPress’ powerful framework. This means that you can easily experience the Ghost environment on WordPress with some plugins and themes.

For example, if you prefer of Markdown editing to WYSIYG/HTML editing, you can enable Jetpack’s Markdown module. For better Ghost-blogging experience, you can install the awesome Gust WordPress plugin . Gust is a port of Ghost admin panel for WordPress$ . It works well even on beta versions of WordPress. Gust sports its own markdown editor which shows raw markdown on edit panel on left and visual preview on right, side by side. Jetpack’s module doesn’t have this feature. Additionally Gust has a cleaner, beautiful post/page manager just like Ghost. It creates an all new dashboard for its own (you chose the slug) and does not interfere with default WordPress dashboard.

Now you need a WordPress theme which can mimic Ghost’s trademark design. Casper by gojukebox is a well designed Ghost-like free WordPress theme.

Casper Tjheme

It is a WordPress port of the default ghost theme by the same name. There are plenty of customization options included, accessible through the WordPress Customizer.

Ryu by Automattic can be a ‘Casper alternative’ with more solid interface. Even though Ryu was not targeted on Ghost’s design, it looks very much ghost alike.

Beyond of all these, if you still want to move from WordPress to Ghost, you can download a ghost export file of your WordPress content using this Plugin.
